I just got a Lumenition set for 25D distributor but it seems I have to saw the pivot for the contact breaker just to get the module to fit the baseplate! Has anyone else had to do this and if so, how do you remove the base plate to do it?!

The baseplate is screwed in place, and held in by the vacuum advance spring. If my memory is correct it is only two small screws.

No sawing, hacking or whatever to get my Aldon ignitor kit in.

The Aldon is an excellent bit of kit. It all goes inside the distributor so looks original apart from two wires instead of one.

I'd take the Lumenition back if you can?

I've got the Lumenition Magnetronic kit rather than the optical version and didn't have to saw the pivot, the module slips over it and has a fixing screw at the other end if I remember (it's a while ago I fitted it).

Just stick with points - whole lot less trouble. And when they go wrong - which doesn't happen with a little care and maintenance - they can be fixed at the side of the road!

I detest points. Never had ANY trouble WHATSOEVER with my Electronic Ignition.

Makes the idling much smoother, and is not affected by changing weather.

At one time I would have agreed with you BMC.

I think the problem now is quality of parts. It's not so much the points as condensers. On my Elan one failed at 300 miles and the next did just over 1000 before giving up

Not too much of a disaster on the side of the road with a Minor I suppose but on the Elan the distributor is buried under the Webers and is a pain in the wassaname to work on.

The Aldon (so far, touch wood) has been excellent and as I said in the previous post is very neat and unobtrusive.

As a general rule I hate modifying cars, am a dynamo fan, for example and much prefer tried, tested and simple. But I fear sometimes there is no choice.

Mini spare do a similar version as the aldon the Pertronix Ignitor .Bit cheaper than the aldon.

Looks excaclty the same, fit in the distributor. Haven't seen any reviews for it thou.

anyone had and experience with these.

Pretty sure it is the same - I think one is the UK market name and the other the US.

See if you can see the dizzy type number and then match it from that, making sure you get one to suit your earth, neg or pos.

Are you sure its the correct one as I have a Magnetronic MTK 003 for the 25D4 vacuum distributor negative earth and as has been said nothing needs cutting its just a straight swap.

Thanks for all the advice. For the record, I DID have to saw the baseplate, but I used an old dizzy. Pain to fit, but it has made a difference, just as new points and condenser probably would have 8^). My motivation was being fed up cleaning the points after being stood outside for weeks/month at a time.

Wish I'd read these boards earlier and bought Aldon though!
