Ash wood panels to replace aluminium rear panels on Traveller???

Keep it original with Aluminium painted blue panels in rear woodwork.

Just got a cheque thru from an insurance company the other day to start repairing my traveller after it was T Boned in January. :cry:
Its still been drivable and if you knew what happened to it you wouldn't beleive how well the car took the impact!

ANyway, once Ive found a new passenger wing ive got a couple bits of welding I know ive gotta do, 2 patches on floorpan, drivers side wheel arch and pass side bump stop then im gettin ready for prep and re paint! :D

My Question........

Im thinking about getting the car to look a little bit different, ive uhmed and aahed about this for a while, the car is completely original, but wont be after its been repaired and painted so Ive started thinking about a custom rear end.
Ive seen a few minors on the internet which have had the rear aluminium panels removed and ash wood panels replaced, giving a complete woody rear end!
Not sure weather I like it or not yet, still lookin at pics etc trying to make my mind up.

But is it possible to buy large sheets of ash wood to do this job?

Anyone on the forum done this before, half the reason for doing this, apart from just being a bit different is because one of my alu panels is dented badly after the accident.

I have only seen one in the flesh and it had the side panels replaced as well the door panels, but they were of a tongue & groove type of design as the owner said that large sections of ash were not available but I dont know if this is true or not, but the overall effect gave the car a sort of boat style finish.

I would try the ash panelling, but keep the ali panels in case you don;t like the all wood look. New ali panels are available for about £25. Or you could cut your own from a sheet of 1mm ali.

Was thinking of doing this too.
Had a thought of staining the wood quite a dark colour, like mahonany and keeping the ash panels very light so theirs a contrast. Will still get panels done as the repair work will include a Complete re-spray, just thinking about getting something different, but at the same time ive always said im going to keep the car original, would e a shame to mess with him but at the same time might add a lot to it. hmmm:-? Decisions!
Might be nice. Still in two minds tho! :lol:

Hi, I have thought about this too as i am a keen reader of most hot rod mags and have seen a few very cool woodies. I think it is the most recent UK hot rod mag that has an excelent looking timber bodied wagon and it looked amazing.
Ditch the ally panels and go ash!!
