Hi Guys,

I've just noticed that the gearbox steady cable has only two strands of unbroken wire. Just sent off for a replacement, and would like it here by Saturday because I'm hoping to join the Pembrokeshire classic car run.
So my question is: what exactly will happen if the last two strands break. Will the car still be drivable but with more vibration?

It's better to be there - but I believe many drive without it. Just try to avoid any emergency stops!

The cable is to prevent the engine flying forward through the radiator in an
emergency stop! It also has the side effect of stopping the clutch operating
mechanism from becoming misaligned under the same conditions as the pivot
is mounted between the chassis and the gearbox casing. As BMC says there
will be no problems unless your mounting rubbers are in very poor condition.

Also remember no to do the replacement up too tight or it can cause some strange vibrations, just enough to take the slack out.

I also ordered engine and gearbox mountings at the same time - I was surprised how cheap they were (sorry, reasonably priced )

Good luck with them - I've had some REALLY poor ones lately, way too soft and prone to tearing at the thought of actually being used...

While we're on the subject of mountings, is there anything I should look out for when changing them? Anything that might bite the proverbiable backside

Yes, you will find it almost impossible to fit the front engine mount rubbers
unless you undo one of the engine mount towers. Save yourself a lot of hassle and release the four bolts securing one of the front towers to the chassis first.

here is a tip for the welders amonst us.

Tack the mounting tower nuts onto the bottom of the crossmember. The last owner did so on mine - it made the job so much easier.
