Hi Folks,

How much gap should there be betwen the long springy metal strip and the points themselves? (excuse technical terms ).

The reason I ask is that I've recently bought a set from my usual online supplier, and when I fitted them the springy metal strip was nearly touching the points. So much so that I put the old one's back on. In fairness I told them about this when I ordered a few more bits a couple of days later and they sent me another set for free. But hey ho, same problem.

The previous type had a red colour plastic, while the newer one's are brown (both types are marked as Lucas).

Am I worrying unduly about this?

(proof reading this note makes it sound like an agony aunt letter - maybe I should sign it "Concerned from Tunbridge Wells" )

All the points I've had with brown heel are rubbish and not fit for purpose.
On the one's I've had, if they work it won't be for long as there is no chance for wear adjustment (the heel is too short)

I know this breaks the rules but surely we should be allowed to spread the word about not fit for purpose parts??

On that note anyone who has bought a srvice kit from ESM recently should check their rotor arms fit. I bought three in a two days (we acquired another mog) and they all had to be returned. The chap at the counter was going to check the kits in stock but some may have been sent out?

Same goes for Bull Motif rotor arms. They also said they would check their stock as they'd had a few wrong uns.

And the one I fitted last week-end was just perfick!

Taking my courage in both hands I replaced the points, rotor are and the dizzy cap all in one go.
Started up just like normal...

After the problems with rotor arms a year or two ago I thought the problems were resolved and now it appears there is a different problem and it looks like the points need to kept an eye on as well

Best to buy new-old-stock genuine Lucas at autojumbles - dead cheap too!

Update on the red heeled points.
This site seems to sell them. It's not a bad site, and they do a good line in flying jacket and goggles as well - although a touch expensive.
