Had a wierd one today, about a week ago my traveller died and it turned out to be the coil- got a replacement and everything was fine for about a week, then today it died again- turns over ok, fuel etc ok. so tried the old coil just sitting on top of the coil that was bolted to the dynamo- started fine- unbolted suspect coil and replaced with old one- wouldnt start, so tried suspect coil sat on top of old one i had just bolted on to dynamo, started fine. You following this so far!.. so it seems i have 2 perfectly good coils but they won't work if attached to the dynamo- checked LT and HT leads and all seems ok. ignition light goes off when started so assume its charging - so cable tied one coil on top of the other and drove home.

obviously not the best permanent solution....

Any ideas?

Steve

Wierd! The common denominator seems to be that each coild works when
it is on top of the correctly sited one which suggests to me that it is the altered angle of the wires when they have to stretch up to the top coil??
So perhaps you have a broken wire which only makes contact inside its sheath when the angle alters to reach the upper coil?? The obvious thing to
do is check for 12v supply when it is in the 'wont start' condition. If you check
for 12v at the side contact on the dizzy (black/white lead) WITH THE POINTS
OPEN and there is 12v there it proves the supply to and through the coil is
ok.
