Gearbox deterioration - how fast?

Anyone got any idea on this...
3rd gear is jumping out into neutral (you may have read).
But 2 weeks ago when I bought the car it didnt happen at all.
Started after 100 miles of driving in the heat, and got very steadily worse since then.
Its worse when the car has warmed up.
Did the seller do something to halt it?
Any ideas?

Has to be worth draining the box oil & seeing what's in it (sawdust / metal bits etc). Might even be the wrong oil!

Maybe it had been sat around for a while and corrosion increased the friction in the selector mechanism, but your driving it has freed it up?

Certainly worth checking th oil level - but jumping out of third is an unusual fault, it's usually second and on over-run at that. For me - it's general worn box and worn bearings. Each time it jumps out under load will take another skin off the dog teeth - eventually it just won't drive at all in that gear.

draining and replacing oil sounds like a good commonsense idea, should try it anyway

have been experimenting a little - moving house at the weekend so havent had time to give any proper TLC to the moggy, but have been out a couple of times.
Once the car has popped into neutral, if put it straight back into third again, it feels like the stick goes a bit further. You can then drive all day in third and it wont pop out again.
Next step - move house. *grin*
Then - change gearbox oil!

Wouldn't drive 'all day' in third - get terrible fuel consumption !!
Maybe a loose selector fork on the shaft - they are accessible through the side plate on the gearbox (drain oil first) - maybe worth a check. take care with the gasket not to tear it - and there are (or should be ) two little coil springs held under the cover - don't lose them !!
