extra instruments

thinking about a couple of extra dials, perhaps water temp and oil pressure, and where to put them to look 'nice'.

i've noticed the mm minors have the extra dials in front of the driver in the right hand glovebox.

i'm thinking this would make quite a nice mod on my car.

does anyone have this set of instruments and/or surround/backplate for sale?

what have others done?

(just thought, this post should be in mechanical, sorry mod)

You just missed a very nice looking set of instruments (that fitted in place of the drivers side glove box) on ebay, they went for £45ish I think! I was tempted, but that was out of my price range!

Most owners make their own up using the opening as a template.

This one looked as if it was factory produced, possibly from one of the earlier types? It had the round centre opening, with a rev counter, and two rectangular guages, one either side, for oil pressure and (I think) temperature.

Series II, I think. Onne would know, I just got one from him.

True, on the MM there is a fuel gauge, a speedo and an oil pressure gauge

If you are just going for 2 gauges and want to keep the drivers glove box you could get a fibreglass pod , if you spray it the same colour as the bodywork it looks fairly original.

This is the type I fitted under the dashboard to the right of the steering wheel, all it needed was a small notch cut either side to fit over the moulded ridge.

Definitely a speedo and oil gauge in there, 'cos he accidentally left them here, which leaves the oblong window :D

It is.
oblong holes : fuel and oil pressure gauges
round one: speedo.

The back plate cost me £10 incl two gauges. And the panel in front would fit a lateer car (post 1963)

My mistake  Hang on - definitely 2 round and 1 oblong on this one, Onne!

If you look at an interior shot it might give you some inspiration :)

If you've got a selection of metal cutting hole saws then I wonder if a drivers side glove box lid could be used - Would even be able to hinge it for quick access to the wiring!

i see what you mean, but it looks a bit work-like, i like the style of the earlier instrument panel, but thanx for pointing it out.

Fir nuff - I imagine getting sqaure gauges might be trickier than round ones though! :)

If it was me, I'd be looking for a huge rev counter to put where the speedo lives, and sinking a smaller speedo (Triumph sized, I happen to have a fair few...), 52mm tempt fuel and oil pressure guages into a glove box cover on the drivers side.

But that's because I like rev counters, and prefer in this day and age to have the speedo right in my line of sight to make it easier to check every picosecond...
