you need a special tool thingy which has a roller held within a diamond shaped surround: the tip of the diamond opens up the channel in the rubber and the roller inserts the shiny strip into it nice and smoothly - at least that's what i've gathered from pics of the tool in question, i've not yet attempted this task, i gather you aren't alone in finding it tricky!
the tool is available from woolies but you might be able to borrow one? as it costs about £20 i think
good luck and try not to smash too much crockery this evening

Rumour has it you can do the job with a flat bladed screwdriver if you're careful and patient.
Though I think this rumour is spread by the same people as say you can fit a screen with a bit of soapy string.

yes screw driver can do the job needs to be a eletrical one very thin and small blade then lightly oil the tip and run arond in front of the insert and push teh insert at teh same time as running the screw driver around
but the tool is only 13 i think and worth its weight in gold as you can not go wrong with it

I have a tool I bought it on ebay its like a scrcrewdriver handle with a diamond shaped loop on the end. I changed mine last year with no problems in about an hour. Unfortunateley the screen leaked after that but nothing some sealant couldn't fix.
If you want to borrow it please PM me your address and I'll send it in a jiffy bag tomorrow, just enclose some 1st class stamps to cover postage whenyou send it back.

You describe your insert as 'stainless steel' if it is this type then it is supposed
to be inserted in the rubber BEFORE it is fitted back on the car! The later
'plastic chrome' type of insert is fitted after the assembly is back on the car
with the aid of the special tool described. (The stainless steel type is in two
halves with a joint cover top and bottom whereas the 'plastic' type only has
one join).

Thanks guys and dolls, apparently the problem is that the rubber has not seated properly over the wind screen opening, could be that the rubber is a bit too long or something.... has anyone had any problems with ws rubber from esm?

Here's a pic of the problem, this is just one corner in fact all corners are similar, any clue how to rectify this ?

The proper tool works very well - Fairy Liquid contains lots of salt and should NOT be used. Screrwdriver tends to slip - catches fingers/scores paint/can even cut the rubber. Trick is to work in nice hot sun - not too difficult these days - and maybe warm the plastic strip in hot water before starting.

i think from what little i've seen of them that the tools do vary a bit - perhaps some work better than others?

SO, which type of insert do you have? stainless or plastic chrome?

Dear all, pl note that the insert is stainless steel not plastic!! Mr Willie pinted out that the insert should have been fitted before fitting to the w/s frame, which I did but it bulged out while being fitted.
Please note the pic on my earlier post, had anyone had the same problem with the rubber? any remedies ideas?

I actually watched the expert assemble the STAINLESS trim and the glass into
the rubber and then fit the complete assembly to the car. He made it look quite straightforward but he was an expert!..Re the ill fitting corners on the
rubber do you have the correct early type or have you replaced it with a later
type because the early stainless trim will not fit the later 'plastic chrome' sort.

Hi will, yes the w/s rubber is the correct type (ext 103 at ESM). Actually the stainless steel insert bulged out because of the the ill fitting corners, and that is also why it cannot be inserted after the w/s is in place.
It seems that the corners would fit somehow better if the waterproof sealer is squezed under the rubber. I tried just one corner and it shaped a bit better.
I wonder if they used this type of sealer originally....
