Lucas ACR alternators

Post by Cam »

A while ago (16 months) I installed an short Lucas ACR alternator on my Moggy. This alternator had a bit of a rumble but I ignored it (as you do), it finally gave up (regulator trouble - charge light constantly on) a few months ago, at which point I pinched the long Lucas ACR alternator from my MGB (new about 12 months previously). This alternator has packed up now also (just after the London to Brighton run - phew!).

I remember when I had the Minis that they seemed to eat alternators, so maybe Lucas alternators are a bit dodgy??

I went to the motor factors this morning and they said that they did not stock the Lucas ACR range any more as they only stocked the top 110 alternators!!

So, they rang around and found me a Bosch one for £36 which I have fitted this evening.

So, my questions are:

Has anyone got any experience with Lucas versus Bosch alternators??

Also, has anyone else had trouble getting hold of genuine Lucas alternators?

Thats a good question I wonder where the Minor specialists source there`s from and as you say I wonder what make. Bye the way that seems a fair price for a recon did you find out which model it is, could be useful for future reference.

The Bosch one is an A216, and the Lucas one is an A100

'Lucas' ??
Do they really exist anymore? - They were bought by TRW and have mainly gone to the dogs?
Could it be that the 'Lucas' parts are bodged together by some sub-contract out fit that had nothing to do with the genuine parts (Same as many AP / Lockhead parts)

Yes, I think that's the case also. But the same question stands:

Lucas (or whoever they are now) or Bosch??

Prince of Darkness, every time. Surely Mogs don't like anything too teutonically efficient?
Happy Minoring!
