As of Monday the 24th of July the Lidl chain stores will have winErgy 5 litre cans of 15W/40 to API SJ/CF-4/CF standard for sale at £6.95 each. It'll be the best price around here for that quality - the same for you? Thought you might want to know. MikeN.

Minor does better on 20w50 - the 15w40 stuff is too thin. Ok for modern engines. I just use the 20w50 from ASDA - at £2.74 for 4.5 litres - used it for many years in both Minor and Mini - no problems at all. Just changed Mini engine (because wanted more power) and the gearbox was immaculate - absolutely no sludge or deposits. Yes - it's re-cycled, so is your drinking water!

You can get it at that price from screwfix or buy 5 and it's £6.50ish

I've used asda oil too... used to use it in my XR2. Once again, the head was sludge free - immaculate even - when I came to change it for a big valve monster!
The key is in how often you change it.

A strange thing I have noticed at events this year have been traders selling good old fasioned Duckhams 20w50 for around £6:50 but what puzzles me is that it only ever appears at shows and I have not seen any in the motor factors or shops.

One of my local motorfactors stocks it, but it's about 10 quid for the can - hence I use whatever's got a good rating and cheap

My local does as well. I used to use it when it was labelled as '20w50 for older engines' and £9 a gallon. But it was renamed 'classic 20w50 ' and upped to £13!! So now I use silkolene at £9 for 5 litres and it seems to get slightly better oil pressure.

Thats a good price for Silkolene.

Thats from Scats. All their oils are very reasonable and (apart from the SF rated 20w50) are ACEA a3/b3 rated. They also do Ep 90, and are the only place I can find plus gas locally.

The amount of money thats spent on petrol in a car I have never seen the point in buying cheap oil. Have used Penrite for a long time now, I've only seen it at the shows so make sure I have a stock of the stuff, £15 for 4.5 litres of 20w50 I thought was reasonable, although I only use that in my traveller now as I found my van to run better on castrol 15w40 diesel oil, still not cheap but if I can see a benifit I don't mind spending the cash.

Well you learn someting everyday I didnt think it was advisable to use diesel oils in petrol cars as they were designed for engines with much greater compressions.

Theres also no point in paying more for one oil when another that meets the same specifications costs less!

I made my own viscosity measurement by recording the time for 1pt of oil to drain trough my funnel.
Cheap £6 for 5 litre 15 seconds
Castrol Classic - same spec but £13 for 5 litre 28 seconds.
so when is 20 50 not 20 50 - when its castrol.
When I have a spare moment I'm going to repeat the test and try at 20 centigrade and 60 centigrade.
I'm going to use Castrol if I change the oil at 5000 miles this will add £7 per 5000 miles or 0.14 pence per mile or perhap a little more if I have to top up every 1000 miles say 0.25p per mile!!!.
petrol cost 13p per mile at 35 mpg so the odd 0.25 won't make much difference.
I think I can afford it.

Will be interested to see what happens at 60 deg. Sounds like my kind of experiment!! Please post the results - still looking for a pair of shocks!!

Nice one Roger. I've made the same conclusion myself but using a worn out engine and the oil light ;-)

I was given a right Bo******** by our BT MT workshop once for putting diesel oil in the petrol moggy van that I drove at the time, they said that diesel oil was a detergent oil and did no good to petrol engines. My own theory behind their lodgic I think was to stop the engineers from putting it in their own cars

(as if we would have done such a thing

Oh I wouldn't ever put diesel oil in a petrol engine it doesn't do it any good. I should have explained the reason it works better in my van is because I have a diesel engine to go with it. Sorry for the confusion.
