But there's not much point unless you have made some mods to the engine to improve it's breathing!

thats ok coz iv put a k&n bolt on filter for better air flow

As BMC points out, the biggest restriction on the Minor's set up is the cylinder head. Unfortunately the K&N will do very little (except make a lot of noise) because the inlet passages in the cylinder head and the size of the valves are what's holding things back.

If you put on a decent exhaust system & manfold with a decent inlet, HS4 carb (with correct needle) and a K&N filter you should get a decent (15-20%) power increase. That's using the STANDARD 12G202 head. Of course if you replace the head with a better one, change the cam, increase compression, etc, etc then it all helps.

K & N is NOT a magic wand - it only has less restriction at near maximum revs - how often do you do that ? Worry about the head and a bigger carb long before the exhaust!

No, it's not a magic wand, but a decent well-flowing air filter and part of a 'breathing' package. A decent head and bigger carb are all well and good, but you need decent inlet & exhaust too to enable the air to flow in and out of the engine as freely as possible. All these items add up to restriction so need replacing with less restrictive items if more power is to be produced.

Aye - but in the order head/inlet manifold/carb/filter/exhaust. many fit a K & N and expect some magical improvement in performance. At anything less than full chat it will be no better than a standard (clean!) air filter. Of course - if the old filter is choked with dust and/or oil - there will obviously be an improvement - but so will there be if a new standard filter is fitted.
