heater only producing hot air :(

I have a Morris 1000 which i've finally got ready for use, but the heater either produces hot air, or more hot air, not great for this time of year!

I suspect the problem is the valve on the cylinder head that controls the hot water from the engine into the heater matrix in the passenger compartment.

I think this valve is not closing completely. The cable is adjusted correctly.

Is it possible to change the seals in this valve? or is it a valve replacement? If it's a valve replacement where can I buy one from?

thanks in advance for any help or suggestions

Lizzy

you can gey a heater valve from any morris minor shop, well except the morris minor centre in bath. as they have merged with esm.

with the repro ones i found i had to releive an area on the back so it would go past the rocker cover
do not forget the gasket

Just close the flap and keep the water circulating through the heater - stops it sludging up.

Hi Lizie, your quite right it will be the valve unfortunatley it is a sealed unit. And if you do put a new one on it won't be long before it lets the hot water through a bit again. It's not easy to change without the right spanner. My best advice is leave it as is and open the window!

Agreed, it's a pain to get to those two nuts even if you take the rocker cover off. Mine is on all the time with the flap closed - OK it's a little bit warmer in the car as the flap lets a bit of air past but not so bad.

So its not only mine that does this?

I find sometimes if you give it a firm tug to and fro it fixes it.
Only works once in a blue moon though.

Whats the agro with changing the tap?
Socket extension bar should get in there easy enough.
Might be worth replacing it with the on/off tap style MG one in future.

I took an old one apart. It has a washer like a tap washer inside, but although I turned the washer over which would have fixed it, I couldn't get it back together.
Its very unusual for me to admit defeat I've spent 50 years dismantling and mantling (or remantling if you prefer) every thing from toys to televisions so I hate to be beaten.

I threw mine away and fitted the older style brass turnwheel tap. Lasts for
ages and it isn't much bother to lift the bonnet in Autumn to turn it on and
in spring to turn it off!

I too have taken tap to bits to try and repair. Ended up trying to seal it with silicon and then trying to tighten wire round it to seal it. Not very effective. Ended up fitting new one.
But as I need to have a constant supply of hot water to vapouriser on LPG system I had to find an alternative to stop flow to heater. Europa Specialist Spares to the rescue. they do bits for kit cars and home builds and in there catalogue thet have inline plastic hot water valves. 1/2" and 5/82" hand operated, also a cable operated one. The hand operated fit in one of pipes under dash, easy enough to reach from drivers seat. In my catalogue the 1/2" is £7.88+vat.
