do other minor owners find filling the tank from modern pumps usually ends in spillage?
is it just a case of being extra careful or is there a knack?

I have that problem, infact I can't fill my Snail with the pump nozzle the normal way or it just keeps clicking and no fuel goes in her...

I have to turn the nozzle upside down, but then when it's full, there is no auto shutoff, it just jets out the side of the filler pipe. It's because the filler pipe to my tank is more vertical than sloping downward like on modern cars, so the nozzle end always detects petrol and thinks its full and turns off -

and yeah, the knack is not to stand next to the Snail when she's having a little drinky poohs..........

Yes - the knack is definately to stand as far as possible to the side when filling up!
The problem seems to come from the twin tubes in the filler neck -I keep promising to try a modified version but as yet have not had the time to sketch one, let alone make one.

I've always found if you only put the nozzle in half way its fine. Also if you don't fill up as fast as possible and ease off as its filling up then it shouldn't shoot out.

I also tend to put the nozzle in sideways with the trigger horizontal rather than underneath and this helps quite a bit + plus the slower refill.
