Side-valve rebuild

Post by Poppy »

Has anyone rebuilt their 918cc side-valve engine? Mine has given up the ghost and after weeks of searching I cannot find a recon 918cc anywhere. So the diagnosis by my faithful mechanic is that he will rebuild it for me - but he needs the relevant torque settings, can anyone help me?

Pleeeeeese!!!

No, but I would be very interested myself, as my 918cc sidevalve is in need of a rebuild.

So, come on folks, help us.

The club did have some ex Army sidevalve engines available the person to speak to is Bryan Gosling, he also runs the Series 11 Traveller Register so he should know who can help.

E-Bay books.

Post by Chris Morley »

I see this book all the time on E-Bay (This is Item # 2169184155, a current auction ) :

The Book of The Morris Minor & Morris Eight by Pitmans.

This particular edition dates to 1937, but a post war edition would probably contain the torque settings needed. I seem to recall that the 918cc engine was largely unchanged when put into the (post-war) Minor.

Sidevalve Minor manuals are probably very rare, but expanding the search to 'all items available to the U.K' gives access to many of the countries they were exported to such as New Zealand.

Result of E-Bay searches

Post by Chris Morley »

Even Better:

Morris Eight & Morris Minor Owners Guide (1952 edition, Pitman's )
Item # 2168564333

The seller specifically mentions the post-war sidevalve Minor so this could be the book with the necessary info. :)

MORRIS MINOR MM AND SERIES II WORKSHOP MANUAL
Item # 2409381167

A real manual covering all series MM & series 11 cars. An Australian edition, finishing 11 a.m tomorrow. Under £10 but add surface mail.

I also found:

Item # 2410106133 & Item # 2410320765 .

I hope this helps...

E-bay manuals

Post by Poppy »

Well.... fingers crossed on the e-bay thing. I've placed a bid for the Australian MM manual. I had searched e-bay but hadn't used the outside of UK feature - pretty silly really. Oh well, hopefully I'll be the proud owner of said book in an hour or so!!

Thanks for your help and for taking the time to find the books for me - I really appreciate it. :D

I fancy rebuilding my sidevalve myself, as I have only done OHV engines before.

Anybody know of any parts suppliers (bearings, gaskets, seals, valves, pistons, rings, etc)?? I would probably take the major mechanical parts (crank, block, etc) to a local machine shop to be reground, but if there is a specialist that is used to these types of engines, then I would like to know, if possible.

Also, what about gearbox and axle specialists??

Hi,

I know it's an old post, but how did everyone get on with their various rebuilds? I'm acquiring a side valve engine soon and will be after similar info...

cheers,
