Metro engine

Post by aaroncollett »

Hello All,

At the moment, our Minor has the 1098cc engine.

If, in the future we wanted to change it for something with a bit more power, how difficult is it to take an engine from a Metro (probably an MG) and convert it for use in the Minor?

Is it a case of taking the gearbox off of the Metro engine and putting a sump on, then interfacing the engine to the Minor gearbox, or is there more to it than that?

Alternatively, what other engines are available that would easily go in? I would like to keep things simple on the electronics front which is why fitting a similar engine appeals to me.

Thanks, Aaron.

The metro has a different crank arrangement. It CAN be done, but it's a lot of work, you'll need an Ital/Marina crank and there is some machining work involved. Generally speaking it's not worth the hassle.

The Marina/Ital/Midget in-line 1275 is a popular conversion and looks virtually identical as the original 1098 under the bonnet but gives a fair bit more power. :D

I Agree with Cam and its also not to difficult to do.

Easy to convert a N-S engine for E-W use, but not the other way! Mainly because of the rear main bearing oil seal arrangement - which a Mini doesn't have and doesn't need.
