Does anyone knowthe Payen number for the headgasket (1098)
Or even the full headgasket set?

ELisabeth has blown hers

this is the compression

135, 130, 125, 60

but being an A-series, she still runs quite nicely. I fear that my car does not want to go to the UK. Bad memories I guess.  :x

What's a 'payen' number? I have a gasket set in front of me - the only useful looking number is HSL070C

and you have helped! Or will any 1098 A-series use the same one?

I acn only find one for a Mini Clubman (1974-1980)
Normally, I'd use one of the UK suppliers, but I need this one asap.

This one, from ESM is labelled "Mini 998cc with copper H/G", and AFAIK you should be fine - I know nothing about Minis mind :D

Just a thought, I remember BMCEcosse saying the 1098 is a long stroke 998. So therefore the bore diameter must be the same. So a gasket for a mini clubman may not fit if it was a 1275 for example. I may be wrong.

wise, very wise. But the one I looked up had 1098cc, not 1275

but I think I might go for a 998 one

Unless the head gasket has blown out of the side (unlikely), then I think you might find this is a valve problem.

Head gaskets that actually blow enough to lose compression that much usually blow between cylinders.

No doubt when I'm back on here on Tuesday, it will all be sorted out !!
:D :D

I hope! But the gasket has gone between 1 and 2, and more badly between 3 and 4. I suspect this has been going on for a while.
