Just tell me,
What *$%%&^(! Size are they?
I'm assuming whitworth - which would be nice since my whitworth collection is rather small...
Taken the exhaust and fule lines off and thought I'd tackle it as it's a nice day and the car is already on axle stands...
*Grumbles and goes to do something else on the car*
See - I'm working on her *now* so yell if you know the answer!

Guess I'll be shopping later on in the week then! Thanks

It's the first Whit I've encountered thus far!!! ( And she's almost completely apart now!)

Ah yes, the unwritten commandment:
Thou shouldst replace, at every opportunity, bolts with heads different to the ones thy is replacing...

I do sympathise, somebody used metric bolts to hold the window winder in place which really foxed me! Good luck!

Originally they are 1/4" Whitworth, but some Minor specialists seem to be replacing them with 1/2" AF (I was caught out when working on a traveller from our branch). A 13mm spanner will hammer on to the bolt (to hold it steady) while you undo the other with a 1/4" Whit, but it's not ideal.

Well, I'm done for today... Just about to go and get a bit more clean han I currently am!
Jobs done:
Exhaust removed (That was a PIG)
Fuel Pipe gone
Wiper mechanism gone
Removal of most of the Dash now done
It's getting there.
I shall tackle the diff/prop another day!

A cunning combination of 13mm and 1/2 inch usually gets there in the end - plus free rounded bolts and bloody knuckles...

Eye, I got them and I didn't even try hard to remove the so and so

1/2" usually won't touch them in my experience (if they are originals). 1/4" whit & 13mm will though at a push.

5/16" BSF. 1/4" is too small and Whitworth thread too coarse.
5/16" UNF will also fit nicely (1/2" A/F spanner)
M8 foreign equivalent (13mm spanner size) don't know how they would be in the hole though?

1/2 inch - did I not mention the big hammer?

1/4" is too small
?
1/4" Whitworth spanner fits perfectly if they are the originals.
However if they've been replaced they could be a mixture of anything.

Yes a 1/4" Whit spanner does fit a 5/16" bolt head perfectly but the original question asked for the propshaft to diff bolt size. Cam wrote "they are 1/4" Whitworth" which could lead to confusion - which it has.

True, but although the wording MIGHT have given a different impression, Nikki seemed to be asking which spanners fitted. She was not replacing the bolts, so I thought I'd simplify matters by suggesting the correct spanner for the job as in this case, the actual thread info is not needed.

couldn't see it any other way.

Yes, I just need to get the *#$&! off ;)
Still, I have plenty of time to regroup. I'm not going to be able to work on the car now until mid-June...

Oh well, differing opinions and interpretations on the English language.
Handbags at dawn then!! Or at the Potteries rally Cam? I've paid my fiver, hopefully I can find it this year.
Re the diff flange/propshaft bolts - the spare set (originals) I have would indicate they are non standard in both length and length of threaded portion, maybe made specially for purpose at the time?
