I have a secondhand pair of front uprights , when cleaned up and the top trunion held in a vice there is some
detectable movement on the leg( none on the bottom trunion ).Point is , is it worth putting these on my car or am I wasting my time? How much movement it there on new ones?
Regards Phil

None ! Strange really - because it's usually the bottom ones that wear and the tops are not too bad. Maybe they have had replacement lower parts fitted. Still - if they are better than the ones on your car - i would use them !

should really be no play in them
but as bmc says, you would probably be ok.
check the threads carefully, they should not be pointed but have a nice flat on them

Try holding the upright in the vice and wiggle the trunnion!
If you can't feel the slack when wiggling the trunnion then it is ok. If they feel you can 'rock' them, then it's not ok.

Doing it the other way round (i.e. trunnion in a vice) magnifies a miniscule amount of slack to feel bigger than it is. If there was no slack at all, then they wouldn't screw together ;-)
