Hello,

Can anyone give me some guidance on setting the timing via a strobe, on my 1963 Morris Minor (1098cc).

The Haynes manual states that the RPM should be set below 450 (I think), or the centrifugal weights will affect the set up.

The manual that comes with the strobe states the RPM should be set to about 800.

Q1) What RPM should I set the engine to, for setting up the timing.
Q2) Should I remove the vacuum advance pipe. I think I should.
Q3) What degree of BTDC should I set using a strobe.

A1) as low as you can to get even running - a good test is to lower the rpms and check the strobe timing, if it does not change when you are lowering, then you are low enough. I have used 600ish before.

A2) disconnect the vac pipe and PLUG IT (carb end) - otherwise you will run lean which will affect the rpm.

A3) with the A-Series engine I have found that 6-10 degrees seems to be fine. 8 degrees seems to be a good value.

Maybe others have slightly different opinions, but this seems to work for me!!
