Just out of interest how many people have either of the above front or rear brakes on their cars?

I personally have Riley 1.5 0n front and Wolseley on rear.

Wolseley 9" on front, Minor 7 " on the back - it's great!

marina discs on front, minor on rear even better

wolseley 9" on front minor 7" on rear no complaints.

the fronts are still bedding in only 100miles so far but still much better than the old 8"

well, 7" all round on the MM, and 8" and 7" on the sII

Funny ,that I dont remember asking who had Marina discs or standard Minor brakes. Still some people can't stand seeing something about either Wolseley or Riley brakes without mentioning discs.
It was only a query, just to see how many people have these brakes on their cars. Shall I put another post on so that the disc people among us wont feel left out.

It makes no difference.
Its the size of the tyres that affects braking ability with 145 x 14 they are going to lock up. Brake fade thats another thing and the extra mass of the 9" means they don't suffer as much.

Depends on how you drive. If you ride people's bumper and want to get everywhere as fast as possible (if not faster) then drums are not the way forward. If however you drive 'normally' then drums are perfectly fine.

I say that as someone who has driven a variety of drum / disc braked cars over the last 10/15 years.

If you drive to the shops and back on sundays with no or light traffic fine.

If not, then sooner or later you will end up with a written off car or in a pine box. Not clever.

Not quite! Standard drums are perfectly fine in modern traffic as long as you don't 'live on your brakes' and overheat them. They will still lock all the wheels up in an emergency, but of course they can't do it very often without fading, but to be honest, if you are driving properly then you should not be fading your brakes!

I wouldn't even get in a car with drums on it for the daily commute today. Frightening they are....

What interests me is the reason that you have formed that opinion! You must have had some bad experience of drum brakes. Would you like to tell us what they were to make you feel so strongly?

i have had a lot of minors from back in 1969 was my first one

i have all ways found the standard set up adequate, when set up correct.

these days i would prefer discs, and these days suits my traffic conditions and needs.

i do not have a problem with standard set ups.

and if i sold my van i would quite happily go back to drums

Yes, I would not (and did not) keep drums on my modified car, but for a standard car that's not zooming everywhere at breakneck speed then they are fine.

Pray tell, where abouts in my original post [thats the first one at the top of the page] did I ask for anybodies opinion on the performance of Wolseley brakes.
I have just checked and I cant see any mention of it. I can see where I asked who has Wolseley or Riley brakes fitted to there cars.

perhaps one of the Mods could check that is what appears on there screens or is it just mine??

Yes, but it's WHY that interested me.

This is based on 15 years of driving them every day, including regular 800 mile roundtrips including motorways.

Sounds similar to my case.

It's not a case of driving carefully, what do YOU do when people cut you up on dual carrigeways in four wheel drive cars with discs bigger than your wheels?

I watch the traffic and try to gauge what people are about to do, but if that happens then I brake.

I was only asking why you felt that way about drum brakes out of genuine interest. No need to be abusive.

You feel happy with substandard 1950's braking, I'm happy for you.

That's the point isn't it? They are NOT substandard.

Anyone who had driven any car made in the last 15 years would not agree that these brakes are safe for modern driving.

I have driven some pretty exotic machinery: M3, RS4, Evo5, 911, etc, etc ad nauseum... I KNOW the difference between the cars and their braking systems. Just because I don't CHOOSE to drive everywhere at hyperspeed does not mean that I can't or have not done so in the past.
