Play in rear hubs

Almost certainly come up before but I cannot find it. I was trying to trace a rear end knock and was pushing and tugging very hard each rear wheel and there is a definite very small amount of 'in-out' play in the hubs, should this be there? It is the same both sides. It is VERY small but can be felt. The knock by the way was my lump of wood to go under the jack in the spare wheel compartment. :-?
Thanks in advance - Nigel (61 saloon, still no traveller, however we think we will stick with the car we know, now had her over 6 years).

There needs to be slight running clearance - don't worry about it!

Bearings tend to start to sing long before they get close to failure, but the MOT man might get picky about play and it's something to keep an eye on just in case.

I personally wouldn't worry much, just check it during the regular weekly checks and maybe see if that bearig runs hot on longer runs :)
