I was inspecting Joemog for the source of this vibration and have found that the bellhousing has a crack running backwards between the top two bolts that attach it to the engine. :(
I'm sue it hasn't anything to do with the vibration but has anyone seen this before or would like to predict if I need to do something about it quick?

I'd be looking for a new gearbox methinks.....
In the meantime I would drill a 1/16" hole at the end of the crack to relieve the stress and stop the crack from lengthening. That is a method used on perspex aircraft canopies.
I remember when I was in a gliding club, a chap had bought a new canopy at great expense. A few weeks later he found a crack, so drilled the ends to stop it running. He then brushed the swarf away... the "crack" brushed away too... a hair! To say that the air was blue was a slght understatement.........

Very unusual PT - never heard of this before. Have heard of backplates cracking - but not bell housings ! Does the crack run into the clearance hole for the rack ?

no mate. at the mo it appears to only run down the vertical section of the mounting flange - about 5mm long.

Should be ok - obviously better if you can stop it with a little hole.
