Front hub

I'm trying to strip down the front hub to remove the brake backplate. Should the locknut be tight? I've removed the splitpin and the nut just won't budge.

Not the front passenger side by any chance? If it is try turning the nut the opposite way

it's a left hand thread! I found this out trying to do the wheel bearing on Phoebe!

If it is on the passenger side it has a left hand thread.

If you keep turning it like a right hand thread, yes...

I knew about the opposite thread thanks. I have tried it both ways but no luck.

Had a fwd car once that had a front end knock on the left at speed, but could never feel any play in the wheels.
The one day the hub fell off.
The PO had fitted new discs just before I bought it, and wasn't maybe the most mechanically literate person.
Can you guess what the problem was?

Well I've persuaded the nut off but now the bearings won't come out. I'm sure I've done this job before without a hub puller but it seems that what i need. Everything is nicely greased and turns freely but the thing won't come out.

You need to drift them out. I used a largish screwdriver. Be warned however, the metal is softish, and takes a burr from the screwdriver if care is not taken.
(That is assuming you are replacing the bearings!)

drift them out
You'll have to explain that technique i'm afraid

I have an old cheap two jaw puller it has the hubs off in 30 seconds and a brass drift to knock the bearings out. Its never let me down.

Put the wheel on - and use that to wiggle the hub off. If drifting out bearings - use a piece of brass to avoid damage.
Edit - Sorry - just noticed RR already mentioned brass.

Perhaps I haven't explained it too well. I'm trying to get the hub off the stub axle so I can remove the brake backplate etc.

As RogerRust has said just buy a hub puller - makes the job so easy -you can get cheap pullers from most autojumbles & Sunday Markets as well as the usual tool stores. My opinion is there is no substitute for the correct tools, they save a lot of stress.

Yes - so put the wheel back on the hub - with wheel nuts on - and use the extra leverage to wiggle the hub off! I have to say it usually just slides off !

Yes, I've never had a problem getting hubs off. They usually come off easily. If you have tried pulling it off and it's 'jammed' slightly by not coming off 'true' then try pushing it back on as far as you can then very gently wiggling it as you pull it off to keep it 'true' or it will jam again.
