Blowing Manifold

My exhaust is blowing at the manifold. It looks like there is some kind of "filler" type material in there that helps get a good seal. Any clues as to what product it may be ?

Exhaust sealing paste? That's the only one I've heard of for that area. It's available in tubes or tins from motor factors.

make sure the manifold and exhaust and the clamp are fully cleaned up before refitting. The old paste goes hard and can prevent remaking the joint in a good way. It normally comes away with a wire brush and some effort.
A good 2 bolt clamp is much more reliable than the 1 bolt hinged type (and if the exhaust continually comes loose at the manifold, this can be a pain to fix, but don't worry about that unless it happens)

I agree with Ray. The only way to ensure a good joint is to clean it all off. This really involves removing the manifold, as the paste will be all around the joint and so baked on and discoloured it will be hard to tell the metal from the filler. I took an electric drill with grinding and sanding heads to mine 'till I saw clean, shiny metal.

Thanks guys, :D
Just as I thought, as with most MM jobs, a wire brush and elbow grease are essential !

Make sure the exhaust flange is properly shaped too (to match the manifold joint) and has no lumps or bumps around the edge which could cause it to start blowing.

Cleaning the old filler off as Pete & Ray have said is essential, but in the past I have used a small file & emery cloth and an old interior mirror to see the manifold joint. Best if you can remove it though. :D

And remember to get it square, and wedge it up tight before running to expand/set the paste.
