Clicking noise?

Post by New_Boy_Traveller »

Wohay have just done 200 miles to manchester no trouble, cost effective as well!!!! Problem is now is I have a little clicking noise that happens when I accelerate, not very noticeable at high speeds. Does anyone have any ideas what this is as I would like to fix it before I do the trip back?

Possibly pre-ignition or "Pinking"? Sort of a clicking metallic tinkling sound. Most noticeable when accelerating in a high gear from low speed up an incline. If it is that, try retarding the ignition slightly. At the bottom of the distributor is knurled screw, A & R stamped on the metal above it. Turn 5 clicks in the R direction, but take note of the original position in case you need to put it back to that!
You could also try a tankful of super unleaded. I get about 10% more miles to the gallon for approx a 6% increase in cost. Pinking has disappeared, and more power. Also tickover is now silky smooth and slow!

any idea as to where it comes from? And what frequency it is? You do know the fuel pump is supposed to make clicks, certainly when accelerating.

No its definately an engine noise, it doesnt seem to accelerate as well, I will try using super unleaded for journey home!!

Could it also be the points then?

I always set the points to 12, is it worth trying 15?

Nothing to do with 'points '!! Pinking noise is more a metallic tinkling noise - not 'clicking'. Is it just one click - or a whole series of them ?
How's the oil pressure - if it's quite loud and only on acceleration then maybe it's the big-ends rattling.

Can I, at this juncture perhaps... suggest...

Between us on this board we have several ex-professional sound people, some people who have worked with minors a long time and people who have got some nice recording equipment.

Perhaps next time one of us gets one of the usual "minor noises" we could record it for others to use in identifying possible causes of future break-downs. Speaking as a musician I find it's much easeir to hear someone else's minor make a noise in order to pin down what's causing it :)

Good idea, as I've got loys of mics a 24/96 interface and Logic pro. In fact it was a project on the list for the future- recorded sounds of Minor on the EKMM web site.

New Boy, have you adjusted the valve clearances lately?

I didn't know you had a setup chickenJohn?

Multi, I am a keen home recordist for various bands's demos I've been in. Its like if I'm not happy with "professional" MOT welding or painting on my Minor, I learn to do it myself!

My set up is good for rock bands, not so good for classical (you are a classical muso, i believe)- mostly dynamic mikes with a few condensors- good for recording drum kits guitar amps etc , otoh, Morris Minor noises are hardly subtle so my motley collection of mikes should suffice.

I fear we are going slightly OT here! ;)

The lads on the Mini forums often post up 'sound clips' to ask for diagnosis of their faults - it rarely helps !

My sister is going to use her 'phone to record some Minorey type noises after she saw me fiddling about with an old tape recorder!

Actually, I was going to use the tape recorder and then sample it with my PC's soundcard. But if sis's phone works ok then it's even easier. :D
