ello peeps, got a problem, when i got engine back from the recon shop, he said it was the wrong sump for the [ebay] bought new crankcase, and he squirted gunk in to try and seal it , when up to temp theres a good leak from the rear of sump, took it off ,no cork seals but mastic, new gaskets fitted but corks wont let sump close enough to block to do bolts up, trimmed em ,not much difference, tried it with no corks, it still rocks on the crank as if the seal housing is too high, any thoughts cos theres gonna be a unfinished project on ebay soon, cheers ,miserable

How about longer bolts, even just a couple until you can compress the cork enough to attach the regular bolts?

Is it a 1098 we are talking about? I have never played with an 803, but the 948, 1098 and 1275 sumps all fit each other. If the holes line up then it's a pretty good bet that it's a compatible sump.
Have you got any pictures of the sump (inc ends) and the bottom of the block?

is it ok to use blue hylomar on the paper gaskets lads?

No - the 1275 engine needs a different sump - the rear bearing housing is bigger and so the 1098 sump is no use. Is this a 1275 engine ?

1098 mate, unused crankcase found in old rover garage, checked and used with standard pistons, well ive filed a bit off the hieght of seal housing, much tighter fit ,and used blue h. on side gaskets, will run it up to temp tommorow and wait for the puddle

Hmm - the later 1098s used in the Spridget had the bigger main bearings too - and probably used a different sump - the same as was then used on the 1275 engines. Maybe you have the later engine (in which case lucky you!!) or - a normal engine and the later bigger sump which would explain the poor fit at the rear!

STEVE, the later type of 1098 engine to which BMC is referring has the number beginning 10CC...... So the obvious question is, what is your engine number?

Unfortunately your pics - great as they are - cut off the important part - the main bearings !! Are you using the sump that came off your old engine - or is this another sump ?

No Steve, no knowledge of those numbers on the block but have never seen
the plate for a mechanical fuel pump on a Minor engine??

Hmm - well that rules out the oversize sump - and i would think if it is the big main bearings then the sump would not go anywhere near fitting ! Have the garage somehow damaged the sump ?? Just a thought - check the rear main cap - does it have the matching shape to fit the sump ? If it was a Mini block - then the rear main bearing does not have that shape - yes I can see the upper half of the rear seal is on the block o k. This is highly unlikely - but grasping at straws here !!

Well, it's got the curse of the blue circle on it - Meaning it must have been made post merger if that helps anyone?
Guess blue circle, 1098 inline, pump blanking plate - Could be late Austin LCV from teh little I've remembered in all my time reading this board?
