I am trying to replace the gearbox mounts and have just noticed the box has moved back about 1/2". How can I move it forward again?

Hmm - I'm gonna sound facile here, but "with a stout length of wood as a lever" works for me :D Try and work out WHY and sort it though. :D

Maybe the wire rope check strap is too tight - slacken it off.

Nope - that's been removed too.

If you take the g box cover off, put the lever down the side of the box with one end on the ground and stand outside the car you can get a fair bit of movement, honest :D

But it's tied to the front engine mounts too - are they ok - or have they broken ?

Tied via rubber blocks, yes. You can certainly get half an inch of movement, just like I said.

sometimes this will happen when changing the gearbox, as when the engine leans back, it ends up staying further back.
As BigG says - a long lever and brute force should show it who's boss.

Sorted it now thanks (the forum went offline for me today so i worked it out myself. this is what i did;
I took a long bolt with a nut attatched, fitted the end inside a tube so it could be lengthened/shortened by spinning the nut. I placed this between the gearbox crossmember and the casting where the gearbox widens. Then I just torqued it up, pushing the gearbox forward.
