I've seen this one on ebay and seller states it was OK when removed (a long time ago) and that it still turns by hand.
What kind of stuff do I need to ask about?

I presume that most people keep the Fiat clutch and gearbox (is that correct?)
Is it worth having the original propshaft too?

Is the big hole in the gearbox normal?

Apart from engine and gearbox mounts, what is involved in fitting one?

What's the going rate for a rough Fiat engine?

Ray, I would suggest getting one that you know is definately ok and preferably hear running. For some reason, they don't like sitting around unused, and you may find head gasket expires when you fire it up. Parts are becoming more difficult to get for them. You will need the prop, and you do use the clutch, gearbox etc. The hole in the box is for gear lever which you obviously need too. To fit, you need engine and gearbox mountings, a revised front cross member, a radiator, clutch lever adapted to suit, engine electricals, modified downpipes and probably a few other bits and pieces. If you look at the Beardmore web site, it explains things in greater detail.
You will also have to raise suspension a bit, as the sump is rather low.
There was a full kit on ebay a while ago for around £250.
Going price for an engine is anything from £1 upwards.

Looks like it may have been cut to clear a X member*, like you have to to get it in the Mog
*Oh OK, I meant rack

That's normal for the conversions to clear the sterring rack. Bearmore's site explains it all!

well Evelyn does need a new engine... but probably not a 2 litre

As for which car is going to get the go-faster treatment - crumbs, not sure. Probably one I don't yet have (or at least I may now have some of it!... uprated torsion bars, front tele damper fitting kit, JLH front disk set and a few other bits and pieces)

You could do up a chassis for the Raymobile. Seems a challenge

crumbs - for an engine with no promise that it even runs badly, let alone 'runs well' £250 reserve was a bit beyond me!
Ho hum - I guess the right one will be out there somewhere...

What about a Zetec fitted to a type 9 5 speed box? You could put it on carbs & use megajolt or similar or throttle body injection & megasquirt.....

Or a 16v Vauxhall XE on carbs using a Cavalier dizzy. - Main cost is the bellhousing.

Might cost you more money (but not that much more as you need to do several mods for the Italian anyway) & it'd be fun & reliable in the end plus you'd have 160-170BHP plus. Both must fit too as both are smaller than the Rover V8, Escort Axle like Cam & a custom length prop.

I would guess £50 for the rear axle, £50 for a gearbox, £300 for an engine, £50 for a dizzy, £150 - £200 for Webber or Dellorto 45's (or bike carbs £100). (£60 for clutch, then engine mounts & exhaust manifold, all which you'd have to do anyway...) If the XE then you also need Bell housing which is about £150...
