Heater not working

Having rebuilt the car and installed a 1275cc engine and plumbed in the heater it now isn't giving out any heat. Is there a correct way of connecting or could an airlock be the problem? If the latter any ideas how to get rid of it?

Also the temp gauge is going up but not reading normal as it used to - could this be linked?

Advice appreciated

Could be an air-lock, try taking the heater hose off the valve (back of c/head) and topping up the coolant from there. Did you have the heater valve open when you filled it originally? Do the hoses to (from valve) and from (to fixed pipe into water pump) the heater both get warm?

Not sure if you're saying that it's not getting up to temperature, if so then I'd suspect the thermostat - is it fitted correctly or is is stuck partly open?

Did the original installation have a heater valve on the back of the head ? 940 heads from Minis don't have the centre hole drilled - the threaded holes are there - but no centre hole. Otherwise - check for flow - I have never had an 'airlock' Other possibility is that there is no thermostat in the engine - or it's jammed wide open - hence the low temperature and little or no inclination for water to go round the heater circuit.

Good point there BMC! The A+ (Metro) engine doesn't have the hole for the heater valve either.
