Door handle rebuild

Can anyone give me any tips on how to reassemble a door handle on my '71 van/
I've got the old (bodged) pivot pin out and now I'm wondering how to get the new
spring/pivot in. As the whole assembly cannot go into or out of the door in one peice I'm sumising that the pin/spring has to go in whilst the handle assembly is loosly in the door. Once in place, with the leg of the spring sat in it's groove, what holds the pivot in place? do you somehow pein the top of the pivot pin over to stop it working out from the bottom?.
