Steering gaiter

I've just been checking the car over and can see oil has been dripping from one of the gaiters on the steering rack.
So, a few dim questions:
What can I expect when I remove the gaiter - will a lot of oil run out?
Is this where the oil goes that's put in the filler under the passenger carpet (I assumed it only went in the metal part of the steering rack)?
If so, how much oil can I expect to have to add after changing the gaiter/
many thanks,

Idris.

ps. Have taken delivery of the website stickers - pretty cool.

Hello Idris,

no, there won't be any oil pouring out. They are a little fiddly to fit as the rach outer housing is quite deep within the body but it is not too bad a job, especially if you use cable ties rather than clips to secure the new gaiter(s). What does need some care is removing the track rod end so that it is replaced to exactly the same position thus avoiding the need to re-track the steering. Careful measurement is the best way that I know.

Should be about 1/4 pint in the rack - jack it up so the side you are working on is higher than the rest. Very little will run out - just put some newspaper down to catch it.
