Simon,
Is this kit easy to fit to A Series. Presume it will need engine out?

Sorry for the delay but I,ve been having problems getting on line. [Bl--dy computers, wish they were as easy to work on as Moggy]
Ian.

yep engine out im afraid, the block has to be modified and the pistons pocketed for the 16v's.

Hello Simon,
This sounds a very interesting modification, could you please tell me how much extra power I could expect and what the cost of such conversion would be.
Also would it be within the bounds of an amatur person to fit or would it need the engine to come to your premises.
Ryan.

I would have to modify the block and pistons for you, but otherwise yes its simple to install.

Is this engine going to be highly stressed and need frequent tuning and looking after, and most importantly, IS IT RELIABLE???
Ian.

It's certainly going to be highly stressed ! No point doing it otherwise.

All tuned 'A' series engines are under stress, but you would be suprised to how much it can cope, i have built KAD 16v 170bhp engines in the past ( 7 years ago) which are still being used as daily drivers now. So this will be no different.

So what sort of h/p could you expect from a 1098 with twincam conversion?
Does the conversion overhang the rear of engine as I was going to fit MG Metro head but have just been told that its tight to fit heater valve onto head.

Heater valve fouls on the battery - because it mounts at an angle on the 940 head. Answer is to use the old brass tap that early engines carried. Actually think some Minis had a very simple connection here too - the control valve was moved up beside the thermostat.
Dunno if this twin-cam conversion would go on small bore engine - valves may hit the block. The crank/rods/pistons would be the weakest links.

i have not tried the 16v head on a small bore block yet, but the first person who found this conversion fitted it to an 850cc so the answer is yes.

On a 1380cc engine we have seen 168bhp, STD crank & rods are good for 200+bhp as proved by the turbo boys so you will not get problems there.

Simon.
I am rebuilding a 1098 and am quite willing to let you use it as a testbed for your conversion. Seriously though will it take carbs or does it need new fangled injection and computers?
Ian.
