Take a picture of this pin, and end of camshaft.

can new pins be bought?
Ill take a pic when I get chance. it wont fall out once the pump is fitted due to the shape. it is most strange though. I think someone has had the engine apart before me as it had more than its fair share of gasket sealant on everything.

John

It has to be an interference fit, you need to be sure of that!

It is a v important pin.... and if too short could perhaps come out one end -leading to a smash up with the oil pump drive and an almost instantly seized engine. I'm sure a new pin could be made from the plain shank of (say) a longish Allen screw or something similar - or a bit of silver steel, something like that.

I have found the pin does have a taper on it as it only fits into the crank one way. is it possible that crank is not a standard one?
how do I identify a what type it is?

John

I hope you are fitting it in the CAMshaft.... I'm not aware of it being tapered.

that was a bit of an epic typo...I mean camshaft.
I could just get round the problem with a different camshaft? does a 1275 cam work nicely? might bite the bullet and fit the mg metro cam.
I havent had chance to get near the car much recently

John

Any (A series) cam will fit - the MG will give an advantage of course - a 'standard' 1275 cam no advantage at all, although it will have wider lobes and very slightly advanced timing. Either of course will require a different spade drive oil pump........

given up with the whole oil pump pin drive problem and got an MG metro camshaft. sames me worrying about the pin, makes me fit a new oil pump and improves performance! seems good all round.
Ill have to see what it looks like when it gets here though.

John

a 12g940 head. still need to sink the valves into the head.
1275 rockers to fit.
a crankshaft damper.
on order:
tounge drive oil pump.
1275 copper head gasket.
does it sound like im missing anything? any other suggestions?

John

Sounds good. Have you measured the head to check the clearance from valve face to head face for the exhaust valves?

New cam followers?
I believe it's considered good practice to replace them when changing the cam shaft.
