Sorry, Onne and Bigginger. I'll avoid the offence in future. But Cam is a bit of a Man of Mystery. Was it not Ray O'Fleamington who described his fellow Irishman as a genius in vehicle paintwork? His full name, he said, was Cam O'Uflage.

But I digress. I'm trying to get my graph up from postage stamp to a useful discuss size. If we're to make worthwhile progress at minimum expense we need a few figures. (A couple of hours measurement are worth a fortnights' nattering.) But Wanadoo will only support 220x220 pixels. with your help I'll get there! MikeN.

Sorry its out of focus; the upright axis is numbered 60, 70 & 80 dB(A) and the horizontal axis goes from zero to 70mph. The upper line it the noise at full throttle, the middle one at steady speed on the flat and the lower line the noise at idle in neutral. The latter is the noise with the engine eliminated so leaving only the body boom due to suspension movement and prop shaft whirl. It'll be difficult to get below this line.
A 10dB(A) increase approximates to a doubling of the subjective assessment of loudness, and in general terms, once on source is 10dB(A) higher than another the quieter level is said to be swamped by the higher. So from the graphs the main thing to reduce is the contribution by the engine.
So I should really do something about the carpet falling off my fire wall!
But are there some real noise-ologists out there? Anyone got a sound meter that analyses frequency? Regards, MikeN.
(PS I suppose a saloon is a lot quieter. And vans and convertables will be off the scale!)

vans are the noisiest, pick ups less noisy, is that a scientific conclusion

I think I've said this before - get a good stereo, or earplugs!!!

But Plastic Orange that's part of the drive to reduce noise. I can't hear speech on my stereo above about 50mph (ie 80dB(A) or loud music above 60mph (ie 85dB(A)); in the latter case the radio volume has to turned up so sound it hurts. To hear road traffic reports I have to slow down. If I could knock off 10dB(A) from the background noise (and that's a lot) it would add about 10mph to the limiting speeds. I'd be happy with that. That sounds fairly normal to me - I can't hear my (albeit rather weedy) radio much above about 50mph in my saloon, even with it turned up a fair old way.

isn't it a bit dangerous to drive with earplugs in? you wouldn't be able to hear warning noises like screeches and sirens..... the police would catch you every time

i'm not going to re-fit the stereo to my van when i put it back together (yes folks it is STILL at the paintshop). I've decided I'd rather be able to hear what my engine is doing, so I can pounce on any potential problems which announce themselves audibly. Anyway a stereo would interfere with my loud tuneless singing.

My van actually isn't all that noisy y'know. Maybe all the filler which the cowboys had installed ALL OVER IT was acting as a damper

Jonathon, has anything happened with these since? I'm really interested since I managed to get the speedo onto the E on the fuel gague (yes it is reading a bit on the fast side but I was pleased anyway)
