not much holding a traveller in place at the back
would not want to be in the back if a crash happened

Thing is, if someone rear-ends you, there's a lot of impact space unlike modern hatchbacks where the rear seat is literally in the rear.

Just to add to the note on rear passengers, I saw a Fiat 500 on the back of a truck the other day. It had clearly been rear ended but something a little larger (X5/Range rover size) and the rear headrests were actually sticking out of the rear window. This also applies to a people carrier with really rear seats (Zafira) type...rear passengers won't always be safest!
