there is no judder coming up through the pedal only the steering wheel and again not at any speed above 30ish only about 20 and clears at low speed coming to a halt ??

I haven't been thru all the other posts but my first thought is wheel balance

Just how bad IS the judder??? I suggest some good hard braking to bed in the linings - to the point of fade setting in - may work wonders.

Ye I'm going to try that Roy , pretty sure it's either duff drums or shoes

Swap them side to side.

What will that tell you Roy ????

Have u checked tie bar nut is tight, both ends both sides? Neither is bent, and both are a good snug fit.

Checked everything , I'm going to change the bushes but certainly not badly worn

we've got two threads running now but with different faults original brake judder,new one steering judder can you split it mod.

Now that you have done everything, it's time to be "cruel to be kind".

Make the judder worse may help detect the problem or I am afraid cause something to give.( or even cure it).
"Or is this a silly thing thing to do".

I am sure we have all experienced trying this kind of method in the past.

I am now at that stage of waiting in anticipation for a happy ending to this mystery judder.

Ok so I had another go at solving this today,
I have checked the drums using Roy's method of turning them the wrong way around and using a dial gauge. They run nice and true so they check out. The shoes look ok and I have checked that both wheels cylinders on each side are working and they check out too. I also tool the opportunity to check that they were tight to the back plate, which they were.
I have tightened the tie bars up at the front again with a longer spanner so they are now extremely tight I don't want to tighten them any more as I risk stripping the nut. Still have the judder though while braking lightly from 40mph.
I can only think something is wrong with the steering rack as everything else checks out, now I have checked the track rod ends and they are fine and the rack is nice and solidly mounted to the chassis. Could there be something inside it that;s loose?? I haven't taken the rubber covers off to look inside and check??

Hmmm - I still think it will disappear if you USE the brakes hard and often till they start to fade. Could be the rack I suppose - but you would feel that as 'play' if you jack the car up and gently wiggle each wheel. I can't remember now - maybe it has been mentioned before - has the tracking been checked and set ?

I have been using the brakes hard to try and bed them in but doesnt seem to have made any difference. No I haven't checked the tracking although I dont appear to have any uneven tyre wear which I would have thought would show up. But I will have a look and see how its set.

I found that the left hand top link from the trunion to the damper arm wasn't tight enough on the taper. I had given this a try before but the nut hadn't moved. But we had a look again and with a bigger spanner the nut went up over 2 turns. Took the old girl out and no judder..woooohoooo

Also on a second note, I have taken the new drums off that I bought to replace my worn ones, they were fouling the brake shoes badly. I am going to take them back to the moggie centre and have a word as it may be a bad batch..

Well found - most unusual - that taper is usually 'impossible' to loosen!

I had the same thing with mine changed rubbers and it got worse turned out to be a worn bolt and eye on the other end of tie bar,new bolt and a touch of weld then re-drilled hole ,perfect.

I have a frustrating problem with my moggy. I have developed an alarming judder which comes through the steering when braking. It is worse when at around 40mph and gently apply the brakes to slow down to 30. I though at first it might be an oval brake drum. So I replaced the drums and since the shoes too as they were a little low. I now have better brakes with a firmer pedal but the judder is now worse than before.
So I then decided the tie bar bushes might be worn so I took them off and indeed the rubber bushes were very tired and loose. So I have replaced them with poly bushes and it all feels much tighter under there.
Took the car out today and the judder is still there.....I am confused.
I have checked the trunions and there seems to be no appreciable wear in either the top or bottom pins, could this be due to bad wheel bearings?? I have only had the car for a couple of months but I have a bill in the paperwork for replacement front bearings about 5000 miles ago, I would have thought a bearing should last longer than that..

Wheel bearings seems unlikely, I'd take a look at the eye bolt bushes and track rod ends first.
Have you tried swapping the wheels front to back, also cheap and easy.

Eye bolt bushes to polyurethane next... Also check the tightness of the 4 bolts securing the front dampers - and while there - may as well drain the ghastly/smelly old oil and refill with SAE 40 oil.
