NO NO NO!! Leave that gearbox and prop alone!!

I removed radiator, starter dizzy, alternator. Then unbolted the engine from the gearbox bellhousing, undid the front engine mounts AND REMOVED THEM, then with a trolley jack under the sump, slid the engine forward.

THEN fit the handy bit of board previously mentioned under the rear of the engine, spanning the gap in the chassis, and roll the engine over onto it. You can slip the engine around to get to various bits.

No way could I get the rear main cap off with any amount of cajoling, however the rear plate comes off with a few screws, so no problem. I did manage to avoid removing the front plate though!

It's easy to lift the engine out - and only seconds to unbolt the backplate - why all the fuss about it ?? It is do-able in an afternoon - IF you know what you are doing, and have a handy swing..................

EXACTLY! Daughter wouldn't let me, and only other useable pair of hands was asleep in bed, so it was down to a bit of lateral thinking!

I had a mate who used the lamp post out side his house for engine lifts..............

Coo! Built in flood light. Now I like that! Trouble is nearest is 50 yards on the wrong side of the road :(

strange motor car,

after reinstating the original type of air filter instead of the 'orrible pancake type i had on, the oil leak has ceased, the clutch isnt slipping, but the oil pressure is still all over the place, even though the oil level is exactly the same.

well, the miracle powered car lives to fight another day.

If you have managed to cure a slipping clutch, then it truly is a "miracle car"!!!
Can't help but feel somewhat affected by your innate optimism :-?
Best of luck, keep worshipping whatever graven image it was which caused the miracle to occur! :lol:

Obviously having 'some' suction on the engine has much reduced the oil leakage onto the clutch.

true true true, and i have learnt yet another lesson that i should listen instead of getting all confused and following the wrong tracks.
so, with this development, is it still worth renewing the crank and all associated bearings? i am kind of thinking yes, as it will keep the engine going another couple of decades,

Well - yes - but you should check you have a good working oil pressure gauge, so you can be SURE of the oil pressure!
