well I'll be there in a modern car of some sorts she failed her MOT on some other minor points (the perils of a re-test no pun intended) which are being sorted on Thursday, too late to collect her and bring her home..... sigh I miss the old girl

Bah. I'm stuck in a dismal Holiday Inn sandwiched between Birmingham airport and the M42.
I wouldn't actually kill for a decent beer but somebody could get mildly bruised...
On thursday I'll be on the way home so I'm missing this week, again. Next week I'm home wednesday night so there's a chance I could be out.

A pallet with engine, gearbox and sundry bits and pieces has appeared on my driveway, and said items will need fitting to the car at some point.
In Swift's words, I have a modest proposal: Would anybody be able to assist in (OK, tell me how to and help) changing my engine and gearbox? Compensation would be by negotiation, but I think at the very least a good pub lunch and a crate of your choice of beer would be on offer.
I need to borrow an engine crane at least ...

Sounds like we need a grage/barn and a Thursday evening. We could do a sort of F1 pitstop thing.

How about a drafty workshop and a large forklift?
Not sure 1 night would do it having seen how much Tea Peetee can put away.
Also based on the standard wondering conversations we manage iw ould think a month would be required

An indoor facility (with or without forklift) sounds great - the forklift would be useful here as I have a bloody heavy pallet which would need moving to said facility.
I could probably get the stuff in the back of the Focus with help from the neighbours though. It might be a good idea to get the stuff indoors anyway, irrespective of when the time can be found to fit it. It's under a tarpaulin at the moment so it's out of the rain, but indoors would be better.
How long does changing an engine generally take? Roughly? I have no idea. I did hear that an engine hoist is a way of testing the tensile strength of whatever you forgot to disconnect...

An engine change (simple swap) might take a few hours, your problem is the gearbox change. Putting in the ford box You have to re-engineer the tunnel and mounting points and move the handbrake and all sort of other little fiddle odds and ends ..... not trivial.
The ford box is a fairly standard upgrade, why not ask one of the garages that does this sort of thing how much workshop time is needed? Their estimate will be for professionals with all the equipment to hand and past knowledge and might give you a clue of how long it could take as a DIY job.

I know I've got the floor section and the crossmember as I've seen them. I've also got, for some reason, a slightly bent Metro Turbo steering wheel
I'm going to check everything over tomorrow and see what, if anything, I need to get.

Every job takes at least twice as long as you expect it to. Even doubling your original estimate won't work because it will then take twice as long as your new estimate.
