Well, Phil, I followed your recommended approach and the seal is now out - not without a struggle though! New seal and existing bearing now installed and hub back on car. Weather permitting, I'll finish the job tomorrow and then see what's what.

Finally, just to round this thread off, with everything back together I went for a trial run today and, on my return, removed the wheel and brake drum again to carry out a pitch inspection. No signs of any diff oil seepage, I'm delighted (and relieved) to say, although I was obviously a bit too enthusiastic with the application of the grease between the paper gasket and the half-shaft flange as some of it had squeezed out and ended up on the drum. Easy job to clean up and de-grease though so, and despite the recommendation of the Moggie specialist whose work I was having to re-do, there appears to be no need for a replacement hub. Many thanks to all who have taken the trouble to offer advice with the job, especially you Phil, your patient and detailed explanations are greatly valued.
