My first car in the 60's was an Austin 7 with rope brakes and it taught me to keep a safe distance and be very alert.
For my son's first car in the 90's I bought a Mk1 A40 Farina (hydro-mechanical brakes) and he learnt to keep a safe distance.
He recently changed his car and left the old one for Dad to dispose of. WHAT? Audi Quattro Turbo 6 speed 180bhp! It is a car for hooligans but I have thoroughly enjoyed thrashing around in it BUT without inconveniencing other road users. They are so capable and insulated from reality it is easy to see why their drivers get such a reputation. Great to get back in the Minor though, much more grin factor!
Incidentally, I passed my IAM many years ago (in a classic) and recently decided I needed to update myself so joined the local ROSPA group. After several free Sunday morning sessions with ROADAR drivers I passed my advanced test (to gold standard ) and feel the experience was really worthwhile. Recommended for all drivers (particularly Audi...).

got to try and defend lorry drivers..as i am one! with the speed limiters we have now,most lorries are stuck at max speeds of 55/56mph,so when you do try to get by someone it's bound to take forever.we can't all sit in lane 1 behind an Argos lorry doing 53mph.it was better in the '80s when we had the old boys trundling along at 50,the chaps staying legal at 60,and the young upstarts like me and the Irish lads doing 70-80mph..and a bit more
get your point about the average speed cameras though.i sit in lane 1 doing 48/49 in a 50mph stretch,and lots of trucks coming flying by on the limiter..don't know how they get away with it

That reminds me of a time around 15 years ago when I was heading south on the M6 at Manchester and had three Irish lorries thunder past me, with one in !LANE 3!, all doing close to 90mph!!!!! Where's the police when you want them?

Even amongst other NI hauliers,"Dukes Transport" were notorious for this!

Going back to Audis etc, how many more LEDs can they get around their headlights? Look like they're dealing drugs.

Why can't I get Theo's image?

I can, albeit only in small 'thumbnail' size. It shows three strips of white LEDs fitted between a Minor's grille slats.

Making it bigger would show more clearly it is a lousy photoshop job.

My German car had a rear lamp failure yesterday, that's the 2nd one in 15 years.

I haven't been on here for a few weeks but reading this negative thread I thought I would 'chip in' and own up.

Whilst I have a Series II Convertible that I am now restoring, my daily driver is an Audi A6.

Whilst covering some 40,000 miles over the last twelve months I can report that I have experienced bad drivers and bad driving all over the country. It is not limited solely to the Germanic makes. Young Girls in KA's, White Van Man etc., the list is endless.

I treat all road users as idiots and then I am not disappointed.

What gets me is how angry motorists are nowadays, nip about 3mm in front
and you look at their faces and see total hate!
If you stopped all the traffic on the M42 friday home time, pulled out the
drivers, blamed the reason for the traffic jam on "the bloke in a blue Nissan
Micra", utter carnage!!
