Hi guys - feel very admonished for previous diagnostic failures however the faults discovered didn't seem glaringly obvious to me - even if they were to an expert and after all many occurred together.
I could justify myself but that is to miss the point. What this interest is about is learning and indeed making mistakes. If users feel admonished and belittled they will simply not post and the website will be full of highly specialised debate between three people........
Thank you to those who have helped me along the way - even if they secretly think - "Told you so"
PS will keep you up to date on progress......

Hi

BMCE is not having a go at you..its just his way...like a teacher to a schoolboy!!!

We all learn something from diagnosing and tracking down problems..ours or others. :D

We do our best to advise you - at a distance! We can't see the problem - we have to rely on you telling us accurately what's going on - and to respond to suggestions so we can see if something 'helped' or not. So when someone suggests checking the throttle is closed - we have to hope you take note of that and give it a try! It's frustrating to sit at a laptop trying to judge what to suggest next - if the original suggestions have not been tested! No one is 'having a go' at you - we are all collectively trying to help you solve your problem....but we do need good feedback. Glad to hear it's working now... :)

Hi guys, have now recovered from temporary madness induced by not checking properly and indeed all that was advised came true, so thanks for your patience.
NOW the combination is working well and makes for enjoyable driving - only little cloud on the horizon is that the pick-up is a bit faltering but have seen using EP90 oil in the dash pot as one possible fix.
Having got the mixture OK, ( raising piston gives slight increase in revs) have you any advice for optimising the timing? I just set it up to run smoothly at idle (600rpm) and not to pink on hills.
Many Thanks

That's about as good as you can do with the timing - provided the vacuum advance is working of course. Perhaps a touch more advance provided it doesn't pink. The EP90 worked wonders for my 'stumbling' TR7 ... so I suggest it's worth a try. BMC Works used it in the Rally Minis !
