I understand now. I thought you were implying that the locating studs for the back plate might not align. The plate came off the engine, so it will go back on. The plate fits snugly on the bell housing, so that will be OK.
BUT The protruding input shaft may interfere. Now I understand. Everything will be done very carefully on a bench first. Good advice, thanks.
I'm still waiting for engine parts before reassembly, but my latest find was the wrong spigot bushing in the end of the crankshaft.

Going back to the 'new' bearing supplied with a shim, surely one simply fits it on the side that replicates the dimentions/apperance of the original. That's what I did. I have a info sheet concerning this somewhere, I'll try to find it.

That might have saved me at least three disassemblies in the past week alone.
