From what I've heard, the 1.4D suffers from head gasket issues, these were cured with the 1.5D, which has an iron block. Hooking one of these up to a Suzuki Jeep gearbox looks pretty simple. The downside is that the speedo drive is contained within the transfer case which you'll be removing (unless you want 4wd), so you'll need an electronic speedo. More info here:-

The how-to is on page 2, but I thought a few of you might find the car interesting.
The Pug lump has similar power and torque to a 1275.
The other option is the Isuzu lump fitted to the Corsa B, in both turbo and non-turbo forms. The non-turbo gives 51bhp and 68lb-ft torque, so should be slightly livelier than a 1098. This bolts straight up to an Omega box. The downsides are that again you'll need an electronic speedo, and the fact that the Omega box is quite wide. You could bolt it up to a Ford type 9 box with a suitable bellhousing, as it shares the same bolt pattern with all the other Vauxhall engines.
