So crank sizes all OK.

The oil filter is an interesting one - never seen a setup like that before. From the previous photo I wondered if it might be an 803 block - but it is clearly a 948.

The cam lobes do look a little pitted, but they would not make a noise.

What's next? Is the only possible explanation the flywheel and the 'loose' bolts?

Presumably there is nothing wrong with the piston crowns? I had a crown break up on the original 948 and the tiny piece of ring sitting on top of the piston made a horrendous noise! If all is as it should be there, then I suppose it's reassemble the engine, make sure that everything is tightened/torqued to the correct settings and see what transpires?

That's the plan!
Piston crowns show no marks, nice and clean.
I'll be rebuilding the ribcase trans first, so that I can install everything at once. I'll keep everyone informed of the progress, but it won't be a fast pace.
Thanks
David

I wouldn't hesitate to reuse these bearing shells -they are fine. I would NOT reuse 4 of the cam followers... I seriously doubt the mechanical fuel pump is making the noise - but it's an easy test for you when you refit if the noise returns. It probably was the fly slapping a little.
