excellent work. at that stage myself. Did you paint the axel complete or did you take the diff and halfshafts out?

I disassembled the axle completely, diff out and all. The old spring mounts were past it so I chopped them off and welded new ones on then sent the casing to get shotblasted locally. Got it back and painted it. Now have to power wash the inside to make sure all the shot is out before reassembling the unit. I'd recommend the blasters!

Rustbusters just outside Comber here, quite near the La Mon hotel. They do a fair bit of classic stuff and charge reasonably, I use them plenty

Yes, I've sort of set the new panel in place already to see where the problem areas are going to be, seems the whole join along the top will be a problem. Has anyone dealt with this before? The portion where the wing bolts to is missing is places and I think I'll have to manufacture and install a replacement panel of sorts but unsure how to go about this.

Probably best to get this panel as well

Ive fitted a few rear inner wings and found them to be a pig to get in. I would fit the wing edge first as its determines how your wing will sit on the car and then make the new inner wing fit the edge as best you can.

By the way, if your free Thursday evening the its the club night at the Belfast Rugby Bowling Club and there will be buns!

I would be inclined to start by repairing the floor edge which also forms the bottom of the chassis rail, this will give you something to clamp and align the bottom of the inner wing to, then fit the inner wing with a few self tappers and cut the wing mountning flange away and replace with tack welds, once you are happy it all lines up check the outer wing for fit before finaly welding it all up(best done by tacking then seams as it will move around otherwise)

Having done one of these recently (and with the other side still to do!), I would suggest:

Get the repair section^^^

Get a decent rear wing. Bolt to repair section. (You have to cut and shut the two bits of repair section together at this point.

Offer said wing and section up the car. Adjust till it looks about as good as it's going to get. Tack to car.

Remove wing, weld repair section to car.

Then attempt to fit inner wing repair to car, to match up with the replacement outerwing lip section. I gave up trying to get the original spot welded seam on the repair section to mate up with the matching seam on the car - the repair section is just totally the wrong shape - and knocked it about till it touched with the joint at 90deg to the lip on the car, then seam welded it.

It's not pretty, but IMHO it's about as good as it's going to get with a repair section that is such a poor fit. (No idea what the concourse types do at this point - I suspect they make their own panels).

If you are not too worried about originality you can cut the flanges away completely and butt weld the joint, this eradicates one of the worst rust traps and gives you more room for adjustment, this is how I did mine.

What does the underside of the rear chassis leg look like forward of the bumpstop???

There seems to me no lower cover on mine, has it rusted away or is this right? Seems to direct road-dirt into the box section of the rear spring mount if so.

Excellent piece of work.

Those little holes by the semaphore, have you got access to the inside? I don't have a two door so don't know the paneling arrangement.

If you can get in, weld a small panel over the holes inside and weld into the holes on the out side. Then file or grind to shape. Just an idea.
