I agree, a competant garage with the correct gear could do it in 5 hours, if there arn't any major problems but I would expect to leave it for a whole day...

They won't be able to order new rings (and very probably new big end shells) until they have the engine opened up, to determine the size required. So it's not going to be a 'one day' job anyway - but the actual working time should be no more than 5 hours.

There seems to be an assumption of honest, knowledgeable, craftsmen who are keen to help, just like us!
Maybe it's because I'm old and cynical, or a Londoner but I don't think commercial garages are full of people like us.

My advice is just take it for it's MOT, don't ask any questions or show any doubts about it passing. If possibly go and have a cup of tea or glass of beer while it's being done.
Should it fail for any reason, get then to explain why and show you the problem, take pictures if need be.

If they say the flunge pins are completely knackered and will cost £2500 to sort out, why not have this 10 year old Seat Ibiza for £2000 instead, then report back here!

Be confident and expect a nice shiny pass certificate!

I assume it's going to a local well trusted garage, where the customer is well know and the regular business is appreciated..... Certainly my local knows full well he will get no 'work' from me - so he doesn't fail the car on silly wee things which he knows I will fix by the next day - and be straight back at him to clog up his MOT computer with a free re-test. He simply lists them as advisories - or just 'mentions' them to me when I collect the car... But he does get the new tyres etc etc for the modern cars in the household..... When I pointed out to him that a new place in the next village was doing MOTs for £30 - he told me to go there, go on, and then see what happens !! I stick with his £40 charge and a good understanding between us......

Unlike you I would suggest Jane Hibbert is rather younger, female, not Scottish and quite inexperienced.
