Well I wasn't actually in the garage when they investigated the problem but I've no reason to suspect that they didn't throughly check everything, and I did mention the starter motor theory. They have been mini specialists for years so know one end of an A- series from the other, and I haven't had any problems with previous work they've carried out. Anyway the new box has been fitted, the noise has stopped, and it got through the MOT with no problems so I'm collecting her first thing in the morning. Thanks to everyone who offered help and advice though - much appreciated

True, with a reconditioned engine & gearbox she should be running well for a long time to come!

The petrol tank is something that I haven't ever had to replace on any of my Minors. Has it sprung a leak Dale, or does it just look like it needs replacing?

Did they fit a new clutch at the same time ?? Did they find anything wrong with the clutch? And - I guess they didn't report finding the starter loose (or held on by only one bolt ) - did they ??
If this was the same place that fitted your v v expensive new engine a couple of years ago - I hate to think what your bill will be.......Hopefully the reconditioned gearbox is from a reliable source !

No, not the same place but London prices aren't cheap. I've spent years searching for a £1 alternator.

Hopefully the reconditioned gearbox is from a reliable source !

hi loise the fuel tank leaks from the welded seam so its time for a new one im going to get it done at a garage,as fuel tanks can be dangerous things to tackle.my father was a fireofficer for herts fire brigade for 30 years and has been to lots of fatalities, when petrol tanks have been involved so i dont mind paying,.glad ruby is sorted,a recon box and engine does make a big differance to a car,i did this to myrtle 5 years ago .you now have many years of motoring ahead .off to malta on sunday .
