Anyone who would go as far as installing a plug, wouldn't then put it in the wrong place!

but were would the right place be ! if that knew the right amount of oil was 1.5 pints you would measure the right amount and put it in

My point being, if they were competent enough to fit a plug, they would no doubt check an axle that had a plug for position. True it could be anywhere if the quantity was known but if one was put in why not position it as a level check as well as a filler. However it still remains that the plug in question appears to be in the wrong bloody place!!!!!

defo in the wrong place its driving me nuts the fact the oil is being pushed or leaking out of the filler plug suggests to me there is to much oil in there it only leaks when driving if in the garage no leaks only when under pressure so i will drain off and refill with 1 litre and see how that goes thanks for all the feedback , joe

Saw this older thread after searching for what my tourer needed. Doing some more research I found the public domain MM manual on the internet and they noted. I also saw several notes as to getting gear oil that is safer for older vehicle from several sites. I ended up using PENNGRADE MOTOR OIL SKU: BPO77296 80w90 Hypoid Gear Oil 1 Qt. GL-4.

LUBRICATION
Oil is introduced to the axle through a filler plug
on the left-hand side of the pinion housing. When
replenishing or refilling, the level of the oil should not
be raised above the lip of the filling aperture.
It is of the utmost importance that only HYPOID
oils of the approved grades and manufacture be employed
if satisfactory service is to be obtained from the hypoid
gears.
Inspect the oil level at the specified intervals, and
replenish if necessary to the level of the filler opening
with a hypoid oil to Ref. B (page P.2).|
Where specified drain off the old oil and refill with
new.
