I'm just curious and open minded. I freely admit that I don't have the benefit your considerable expertise in this area. So in this battery disconnected scenario, I think you seem to be implying that the HT circuit could indeed take a route via the alternator - through it's windings, rectifier, and commutators, and through the ignition switch, to return to the coil?

Or is there some other route it might take?

Or perhaps a complete circuit is not a necessity?

I did the alternator mod and the thought about moving the coil but decided to fab a bracket

An observation and not a criticism.
Having the weight of the coil at the end of that strip of metal tied in with any engine/road vibration forces acting on the bracket will be compounded by the length of the bracket and could lead to failure of the alternator mounting bracket.

On the Morris Oxford the coil is located up on the bulkhead with the terminals pointing down.
