well I am also surprised, I seem to have a temperature gauge as mentioned here and a 1098 engine, and I am trying to figure out where the wire goes, if it is connected to one of the warning lights inside the speedo.

I'm sure we have been over this already - there is/never was a temperature gauge or warning light fitted to the Minor 1000 as standard. Any such thing has been fitted by a previous owner - and goodness only knows what they did!

I'll take a few pictures so that you can help figure this out. I too would like to sort out this small issuse

Sorry for reviving an old thread, but this got me thinking:

My engine, which I believe to be a 1098, has no tapping for a temperature sensor either, and looks almost identical to bjm38's (except for a pipe running downwards from the front tappet chest cover). Like his, there's no tab with 1100 stamped on, and I also don't think my engine number makes any sense: RKM1104E 7067?

There's a small flat disc behind the manifold, in a slightly different location to PSL184's, but there is no number stamped in to this. Something could have been grinded off though, I guess...

some professionally reconditioned engines got given new engine numbers by the reconditioners, that could explain your odd engine number.

you could try bmc's idea of poking a chopstick or a drinking straw down a spark plug hole and turn the engine over on the handle and measure the distance that the piston goes up and down.

and the suggestion to take off the rocker cover (easy job) and look for casting numbers on there. 12G202 means it's a 1098 minor head. so keep an eye out for '12g...' numbers or 'CAM...' numbers. I cant recall the number but i think CAM140(?) is a 948 head.

The only numbers I found on removing the rocker cover were 2A629 SM and MOWOG 14 8.

sometimes it can be well hidden, possibly under the rocker assembly. neither of those numbers sound like head castings to me.

It's certainly NOT a 1098 cylinder head. The 948 blocks have '950' cast in the side. So maybe someone has fitted an early head on a 1098 block....... The power will be down somewhat..........
And yes - the 2A629 is a 948 head with the tiny inlet valves.

Looks like a proper 1098 cylinder head is on my shopping list then. Is it simple enough for a total novice to fit? Bull Motif sell a fully reconditioned unit complete with valves and springs - I presume this means it comes assembled.

Nothing against Bull Motif-on the contrary, but that is an expensive way to go. If it's not urgent and the car is running OK and you are happy with it, then I would certainly make it a long term project and if at all, just try and source a second hand head. You could also consider upgrading to a 12g940 head with the appropriate manifold and HIF 38 carb. There's lots of info on here on that topic.
Download yourself a free copy of the official workshop manual from the other minor website-useful anyway. If it's only the temperature gauge you are after, there are thermostat housings available with a suitable thread for fitting temperature sensors-no need to touch the head. Consider a pressure gauge to match while you're at it.

its a goldseal engine. I.e. a refurb done by unipart for BMC/Leyland. Not nessecarily a bad thing

Not nessecarily done by unipart though. It would have been painted gold (or possibly silver) coming from them. Somebody has had a play with your engine in the past...

That 'splains it. Probably one of those unnecessary "unleaded conversions" I've heard so much about.

Hang on until the national rally, there will be heads aplenty there.
Not to mention a few Minors .

I daresay that by the national I will have a spare 1098 head you can HAVE neil. (but I'm not helping you fit it in the rally field )
